How to Know If Your Child Needs Orthodontics

January 23, 2018

As an Orthodontist and dad I’m often asked about the best time to have children evaluated for orthodontic treatment. The challenge (as we all know!)  is that every kid is different…my three boys certainly are!. However, a good milestone for checking in is around age seven, when a child’s jaw is developed enough, and he or she has enough permanent teeth for an orthodontist to tell if there are any current issues… or any that may come up down the line.

We talk a lot about early intervention in orthodontics because there are many benefits to undergoing orthodontic treatment as a child, including shorter treatment time, fewer impacted permanent teeth and reduced chance of needing to remove teeth. That’s because, when we see children early enough, we can minimize crowding to make room for teeth that have yet to come in, help to guide jaw growth and work to correct the results of bad habits, like thumb sucking, before they turn into larger orthodontic issues.

All that said, there are signs that you can look for that will help you to identify when is the right time for a visit to the orthodontist:

  •    Particularly early or late loss of baby teeth
  •    Difficulty chewing or biting into food
  •    Grinding and/or clenching of teeth
  •    Mouth breathing
  •    Thumb or other finger sucking
  •    Teeth that look crowded in the mouth
  •    Jaw shifts or jaw noises like popping
  •    Protruding teeth
  •    Teeth that meet abnormally or do not meet at all
  •    Jaw and teeth that do not appear to be proportionate to your child’s face

Keep in mind that these signs do not guarantee that your child needs treatment, but they may indicate that an orthodontic evaluation could be a good idea.

Do some of these signs look familiar to you?

The Road to a Selfie-Ready Smile for Your Teen

October 3, 2017

Remember when your kid was little and you’d yell “Say cheese!” before snapping a photo? All those goofy smiles. As your child has grown into a teen, does he still smile for photos? A big, real smile showing his teeth?

All parents want their teenagers to be happy, confident and feel good about themselves. The teen years are rough! Those years of feelings awkward and insecure – don’t remind me! They say our smiles are the gateways to our hearts, but many of us are too insecure about our teeth to let our smiles shine.  Now more than ever, we have options to get your teen that selfie-ready smile before they’re off to college.

Two main questions parents and teens have about orthodontics are:

  •     Will it hurt?
  •     How long will this take?

Think of your options as the settings on your GPS. Whether your teen prefers the fastest route or the more enjoyable scenic route, we will get him or her to their destination of a straighter smile.

Fastest route

If your teen is of the mindset that the quicker the better, then braces and AcceleDent® is the way to go. You may not be familiar with AcceleDent, an orthodontics system that goes over the braces for 20 minutes each day to accelerate the work the braces are doing by up to 50%. The exclusive SoftPulse Technology’s® precisely-calibrated micropulses gently accelerate the movement of your teeth as guided by your orthodontics…Which means shorter time in braces!

Scenic route

If your teen is concerned about how she will look with metal braces or that braces will restrict her too much, she should ask about Invisalign® Teen. Invisalign aligners are made of nearly invisible clear plastic. Some teens also like that the aligners are removable so they can eat whatever they want.

There is no right or wrong answer – it’s a matter of which treatment process is right for your teen. The great news is that you have options! Click or call us today at any of our 3 convenient locations: East Boise, Eagle or Meridian.  (208) 383-0100 to schedule a complimentary consultation and get your teen a straighter smile by college!
